Summer Time

Summer Time

Where do I begin with the story of this song?…

It all started chronologically with a conversation I was having with my ex. We went out for 5 years, broke up, then stayed close friends. Anyway…

It was Spring and a cold one at that. We were talking about how we both missed the Summer, and was looking forward to this Summer, even though it was taking forever to get here…

So I wrote this song, here’s the lyrics:
G-C7
G-Am-D
The sun is high up in the sky
You are the apple of my eye
I'm so happy I could fly, oh I could fly
In the summertime (x2)

Let’s go down to the beach
We'll put our feet into the sea
Doesn't matter if it's just you and me
Just you and me
In the summertime (x2)

In the summertime, summertime (x2)

The stars are out for us tonight
Let's go dancin in the moonlight
We'll stay up late and it'll be alright
It'll be alright, in the summertime

Summertime, summertime (x2)

Let's wake up late and stay in bed
Don't you stress let's just sleep instead
Don't worry just stay with me
Stay with me, stay with me
In the summertime (x2)

Summertime, summertime…

The “Progression” of a song is very important to me. Some songs exist within a moment, which is fine, but fundamentally different from a song that tells a “story.” I started writing this song ecstatic about a hot fling that I recently started, week of after Valentine’s day, mind you. That in chorus with this conversation with my ex-gf-current-friend, and a musical escapade after my weekly open mic, me good friend Reza and I jammed to a simple chord progression. G and C. From that jam session I worked on this song that reminisced about Summer, the beaches, the friends, the ice cream, the campfires, the friends…

From the progression of a Summer day, I tell a story, but with it I tried to mix a theme in, a twinge of sadness. You see, that hot “Summer Fling” that, comes and goes as they do, did exactly that.

As a Summer day comes,
night must fall.

The Spring harvest is reaped,
Fall comes.

If you know what I mean… ;P
